Rochester, NY – [May 12, 2025] – A powerful new initiative is teeing up opportunities for local youth. Thanks to the generous support of the Oak Hill Foundation, the Rochester District Golf Association (RDGA) Foundation, and First Tee Western New York, 50 children from underserved communities in the Rochester area will receive access to high-quality golf instruction, life skills programming, and essential resources through the Jerry Stahl Scholarship.
Participants will be selected from trusted community partners — the YMCA of Rochester, Boys & Girls Club of Rochester, and Monroe County Youth Bureau. Providing access to the game of golf for those who may otherwise not have the opportunity to participate
The scholarship includes:
- First Tee programming that blends golf instruction with character and leadership education
- RDGA Junior Membership and Youth on Course Pass for affordable golf course access
- Golf equipment, uniforms, practice facility use, and USGA GHIN Handicap
- Transportation to classes and golf course field trips
- Coach training for community partner staff to extend learning year-round
Named in honor of Jerry Stahl, a passionate advocate for youth and the game of golf, this initiative reflects his legacy of inclusivity and opportunity. The program goes beyond golf — it empowers participants with mentorship, life skills, and pathways for growth both on and off the course.
“This collaboration exemplifies what’s possible when community partners come together,” said Tim Karches, Executive Director of First Tee WNY. “We’re not just growing the game — we’re building the next generation of confident, resilient leaders.”
“I can’t think of a better reason than the Jerry Stahl Scholarship to partner with the Oak Hill Foundation and First Tee Western New York,” said RDGA Executive Director Tim Vangellow. “Not only will this program create opportunities and provide support and resources for young golfers in Western New York, but it also strengthens the bonds we have with two great organizations in our area.”
“Bringing golf to youth that might not otherwise have an opportunity to learn the game, and to share in its traditions, fits perfectly into our objectives,” commented Fred Beltz, President of the Oak Hill Foundation. Beltz went on to add, “We are proud to be working hand in hand with the RDGA and the First Tee on such an important effort.”
The participants will start receiving instruction July 7th and will have access to the RDGA Junior pass in June through October weather depending. The program is projected to grow significantly over the next three years, aiming to serve 150 youth annually by 2027..
