Finals Are Set for the 2014 RDGA Junior Championships at Mendon Golf Club

After two days of competition in the 2014 Rochester District Golf Association Junior Championships, the final matches are set for the Boys’ and Girls’ Junior (ages 15-17), Sub-Junior (ages 12-14) and Boys Pee Wee (ages 7-11) Championships this Sunday at Mendon Golf Club.

On Thursday, the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds were contested in the Junior and Sub-Junior Championships, while the Boys Pee Wees played the first nine holes of their Championship and the Girls Pee Wees completed their nine-hole Championship.

In the Boys Junior Championship, Sunday’s final match will be contested between defending champion Gunnar Doyle of Mendon Golf Club and Evan Gaesser of Brook-Lea Country Club. Playing on his home course, Doyle defeated Oak Hill’s Patrick DiPasquale, 3-and-1 in the quarter finals, then bested Locust Hill’s Zachary Ottman, 2-and-1, in the semi finals. Gaesser advanced to the Junior finals by outlasting Brook-Lea’s Thomas Conroy in the quarter finals, 1-up in 20 holes – then defeated Kevin Siegel of Shadow Pines, 3-and-2, in the semis. In the Girls Junior Championship, Sunday’s final match will be contested by Ridgemont Country Club’s Emily Doell and Monroe Golf Club’s Madeline Glynn. Doell advanced to the finals after receiving a bye; Glynn defeated Salmon Creek’s Victoria Ortiz, 4-and-3 in the semi finals. In the Boys Sub-Junior Championship, Sunday’s final match will be contested between Penfield Country Club’s T.J. Buck and Oak Hill Country Club’s Jacob VanderZwaag. Buck advanced to the finals by defeating Locust Hill’s Darian Saracevic, 1-up, in the quarter finals, then Old Hickory’s Tyler McDonnell, 5-and-3 in the semi finals. VanderZwaag reached the finals with an 8-and-6 victory over Locust Hill’s Jude Cummings in the quarter finals, and a 5-and-4 victory over Cobblestone Creek’s Jeremy Summerson in the semi finals. In the Girls Sub-Junior Championship, the final match on Sunday will be between defending champion Sydney Ball of Mendon Golf Club and Locust Hill Country Club’s Lena Kaufman. Ball reached the finals by defeating Brookwoods’ Kahlan Vanschaffel, 1-up, in the semi finals, while Kaufman defeated Mendon’s Sophie Renzi, 2-and-1, in the semis. In the Boys Pee Wee Championship, Evan Zito of Victor Hills Country Club is leading after nine holes of play with a score of 42. Tied for second at the halfway point is Philip Minnehan of Lake Shore Country Club and Graham Gaenzle for the Country Club of Rochester, who both posted nine-hole scores of 44 on Thursday. In the Girls Pee Wee Championship, Michaela Eichas of Stafford Country Club won the title on Thursday, posting a final nine-hole score of 53. Runner-up in the Girls Pee Wee Championship was Eichas’ sister, Marisa Eichas, who posted a nine-hole score of 83.

Tee times for Sunday’s final matches at Mendon Golf Club will begin at 2:30 p.m, starting with the Boys Junior final between Gunnar Doyle and Evan Gaesser, followed by the Boys Sub-Junior, Girls Junior and Girls Sub-Junior final matches every eight minutes after. The tee times for the final nine holes of the Pee Wee Championships will start between 3:04 and 3:24 p.m. The public is invited to attend, free of charge.
