RDGA Host Courses Make RDGA Tournaments Possible!
Each year, the Rochester District Golf Association conducts as many as 25 events for you, our member golfers. These include our popular Two Person events – Scrambles, Best Balls Stablefords and other two-person formats – as well as high-level amateur championship events such as qualifiers, our Match Play Championship, Senior & Mid Amateur Championships, the RDGA Women’s Open and, the RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Jr. Memorial.
In addition to those events, the RDGA also conducts two annual USGA Qualifiers – a Local U.S. Open Qualifier and a U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier.
Then, there are the non-RDGA, “outside” events we help conduct, such as the Folds of Honor Tournament, the Special Olympics Tournament as well as local Section V High School Championships for Boys and Girls.
Why do I mention these events here, you may ask? Because – each one of them requires a committment from one of our regional RDGA Member Clubs to serve as a host venue.
This year, the RDGA conducted 19 member events, as well as the two USGA Qualifiers and other, “outside” events – all hosted by 15 different Member Clubs.
The process for selecting each of these host courses usually begins before the previous season is even over – when RDGA Director of Rules & Competitions, Ty McHerron, reaches out to RDGA Member Clubs to see if they would be willing to host RDGA events – and be able to include one (or sometimes more) of those events into their calendar for the following season.
Once the dates are confirmed, and a standard contract is approved to host each event, then the annual season RDGA Tournament Calendar can be assembled and prepared to open for registration beginning in early February.
In 2027, the host course for the RDGA District Championship – and all those associated events – will be the stately and historic Midvale Country Club in Penfield, designed in the early 1930s by a young Robert Trent Jones, an East Rochester native who later became known as one of the preeminent golf course architects of the late 20th century.
If you’ve played in any of these in the past, or are considering playing in one of them next year – perhaps for the first time – I encourage you to seek out the Head Professional, Superintendent, General Manager or member from the host course you are playing on and thank them for inviting you (and the RDGA) to enjoy their hospitality for the day.
And to all our RDGA Member Clubs who’ve hosted past RDGA events – or will be hosting events in 2027, we at the RDGA sincerely thank you for your hospitality and support for the local golfing community – one of the reasons why Rochester is such an exceptional region for golf!
Best regards,
Tim Vangellow
