Country Club defeated Larry Sand, Irondequoit
Country Club, 6 & 5 in the final match of the
2007 Rochester District Golf Association Match
Play Championship, at Stafford country Club.
Scorse saved his best golf
for the final match. He birdied five holes, #1,
#5, #7, #11, and #13 with his only bogey at #9.
Sand was never up in the match after
methodically winning his way to the finals.
The championship began on
Friday, May 18 with the top 32 players in the
RDGA, based upon their point totals from the
2006 season.
Defending champion, John
Kircher, Monroe GC, won his Friday morning match
against club mate Dana Consler, 3 & 2. He lost
in the second round to Pete VanValkenburg,
Caledonia CC, 4 & 3.
Larry Sand reached the
finals by downing Andy Conway, Ravenwood GC, 2 &
1, Tim Spitz, Monroe GC, 4 & 3, Pete
VanValkenburg, 2 up, and Rick Rumble, Oak
Hill
CC, 1 up in the semi0final match.
Meanwhile, Jim Scorse, 3
time RDGA John H. Ryan Jr. Memorial Championship
Winner and runner up to Kircher for the 2006
RDGA Player of the year, used home course
knowledge to win his five matches in three days.
He defeated Corey Lamberton, Churchville GC, 5 &
4, Brian Riley, Brook Lea CC, 4 & 2, Ken
Andrychuk, Clifton Springs CC, 2 up, and Colm
Murphy, Webster GC, 2 & 1 in the semi-finals.
The RDGA Match Play
Championship has become the first major event
for the top players in the Greater Rochester
area. In 2006, the event was moved from a late
summer date in August to the opening major event
of the RDGA season in May.
