RDGA Approves
Electronic Range Finders for all 2008 Tournaments
Rochester, New York April 29, 2008 – The
Rochester District Golf Association at its April Board meeting has
approved the use of Electronic Range Finders during all of its 2008
tournaments, including the John H. Ryan District Championship to be
played at Penfield Country Club from July 9-12. Last year the USGA
allowed the local districts to determine their own rules for the use of
such equipment, but did not allow USGA contestants to use the measuring
devices for any of their 2007 tournaments. The RDGA studied the use of
such technology for the last year and determined that such devices would
be appropriate for use this year. According to RDGA President John Fox,
“We did not want any one player to have an unfair advantage. But since
the USGA has changed the ruling, where giving distance information to a
competitor is not considered advice, we determined that the distance
range finders would be OK, and just might speed up play.” However the
RDGA will allow those devices that only measure distance, not elevation,
wind, temperature or any other factor.
If a player is using an unapproved electronic
measuring device, the penalty will be disqualification. The player
should get any device approved by an RDGA official before the
tournament, in which he is playing, begins.
