New Rule Change – Electronic Range Finders Now Allowed For Use

The United States Golf Association has approved the use of distance marker technology for play in all sanctioned tournaments.  The GPS (Global Positioning System) Devices have been around for some time and a few courses in the Rochester area already use this technology.  The RDGA is now deciding how this ruling will affect its tournaments and how the 65 local clubs should react to the ruling.  The USGA has ruled that ERF’s are allowed, but each club, with the help of the RDGA, must now decide if this new technology is fair for all golfers.  “If some golfers have a GPS device and some don’t, does this make for a fair contest?” said RDGA President, Jim Cook.  “Because of the gaps in use around the Rochester area, GPS devices will be covered by a local rule at each club and for each tournament. “ Cook said.  He also mentioned that the RDGA is working on providing language that will help the local clubs decide how to approach the use of ERF’s during the 2006 Golf season.
