Rules Committee Chairman.
This
summer’s competition will be held August 12-13, 2007 at
Williams Country Club, located in Weirton, West
Virginia. Established in 1931, the club is rated in the
top five of West Virginia’s best private clubs. The
stone clubhouse affords a spectacular view of the scenic
Ohio River Valley.
The
Williamson Cup will hold its 44th year of
competition this summer. The competition was initiated
in 1964 by A. Fred Williamson in memory of his father,
Fred E. Williamson. Both were long time members at the
prestigious Winged Foot Country Club in Westchester
Country, just north of New York City.
The
original four golf associations competing were Quebec,
Washington D.C., New York Metropolitan, and
Philadelphia, PA. It has expanded to include 11 golf
associations today, including the Rochester District
Golf Association. Mike Sorce, the RDGA Junior
Chairperson for the past 8 years, was appointed a
Trustee of the Williamson Cup in 2003.
The
format for the competition is 36 holes of stroke play.
Each year the RDGA team is selected from the junior
players who compete in the RDGA weekly classic stroke
play events, the RDGA Junior Championship, the NYS
Junior Championship and USGA Junior events. The four
players with the most points accumulated comprise the
Rochester District team.
There
are 11 major Golf Associations that participate in the
event. They are Rochester, Syracuse, Delaware, Michigan,
Ontario, Quebec, New York Metropolitan, Philadelphia,
Western Pennsylvania, Washington Metropolitan, and the
Pennsylvania State Golf Association. These associations
rotate hosting the event each year. It will be held in
Rochester again in 2009 at Oak Hill Country Club.
