Florida's Greyserman Secures Spot in Championship
The Rochester area qualifier for the USGA Junior championship was held Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Batavia Country Club. The USGA Junior Championship is open to young men who have not reached their 18th birthday and have a USGA handicap index of 6.4 or lower. The 2011 Championship will be held at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, WA, July 18-23, 2011. The field will include 156 players including any exempt players.
The Rochester and Buffalo regions alternate hosting a USGA qualifier for the Championship each year. There were 64 sectional qualifying sites across the country with competitors free to select any one site in their quest to play in this championship.
The forty competitors at Batavia Country Club, represented three foreign countries and three states. Two traveled from Colombia, one from Mexico and eighteen from Canada. Fourteen were New York residents with one from New Hampshire and one from Pennsylvania. They were all competing for two places in the 36 hole stroke play event.
The medalist and top qualifier was Max Greyserman, from Boca Raton, FL. He scored a four under par 68 in the morning round and finished with a solid 74 in the afternoon round over the 7,225 yard, par 72 course. His two under par total of 142 won the medalist prize and earned him a trip to the Championship in July. The second and final qualifying position went to Sean Bozuk from Toronto, Canada. He put together two solid rounds of 74-73-147.
The alternate positions were determined after a playoff. Esteban Castro from Colombia, shot 78-70-148 to tie Kenny Sames from Roaring Brook Township, PA, who had rounds of 74-74-148. Castro won the 1st alternate position by sinking a 30 foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole.
Unfortunately, none of the Rochester area or New York State entries in the qualifier were among the leaders this year. Gavin Hall of Pittsford, is exempt from qualifying this year due to his reaching the quarter-finals of the 2010 Championship.
Batavia Country Club was a gracious host for this 36 hole stroke play qualifier. Competitors enjoyed the course layout and the excellent greens. Thanks also to top rules officials Wilson Fitch and Lee Brooks from the Rochester District Golf Association and New York State Golf Association, respectively. They aided a number of local volunteers who helped conduct this USGA Junior Championship Qualifier.
