Women’s Golf Celebrated at 2017 RDGA Women’s Open, Hosted by Irondequoit CC

The fourth annual RDGA Women’s Open was hosted by the beautifully-conditioned Irondequoit Country Club on Monday, September 11, as Women’s Golf in Rochester was celebrated under perfect late summer conditions.
 
The 18-hole stroke play competition included women golfers of all ability levels in a fun-filled day that included a buffet dinner and awards ceremony following play.

The format for the 2017 Women’s Open included overall competition in gross score and net score divisions, as well as six separate flights based on handicaps.

 
Winning the overall scratch Women’s Open title for 2017 was Wendy Bolton from the Executive Women’s Golf Association of Rochester, who posted a raw score of 12-over-par 86.
 
Bolton finished two shots ahead of Patty Riedel of Penfield Country Club, who posted an 88. Last year’s RDGA Women’s Open Gross Score champion, Deb Wood, and Jenny Ford, who was playing on her home course, both tied for third overall with scores of 89.
 
Each of the top-10 Gross Score finishers in this year’s RDGA Women’s Open receive points towards the 2017 RDGA Women’s Player of the Year Award, based on order of finish.

The RDGA Women’s Player of the Year Award will be presented during the 2017 RDGA Fall Event and Awards Ceremony at Locust Hill Country Club on October 10.

Winning the overall net Women’s Open title this year was EWGA/RDGA member Kelly Kaye with a handicap-adjusted score of 66. Kaye finished five shots ahead of fellow EWGA/RDGA member Shari Morley, who had a 71. Susan Gay, Mary Faggiano and Lynn Spiotti all finished 6 shots back at 72.

Also recognized following the conclusion of the 2017 RDGA Women’s Open were the six individual flight winners, based on handicap, including:

  • Flight 1: Jenny Ford / Mary Schlitzer
  • Flight 2: Lynn Spiotti
  • Flight 3: Janet Lyn Kowal
  • Flight 4: Shari Morley
  • Flight 5: Jane Ellen Bailey
  • Flight 6: Susan Gay

As the overall champions, Bolton and Kaye were each presented with the Women’s Open championship trophies – which can be displayed at their home clubs for the next year – as well as comemmorative winner’s plaques, and Savvy Girl Golf’s Signature Golf Purses.

The only event of its kind in Rochester, this year’s field included 98 women representing many of the Rochester area’s local private, semi-private and public golf clubs and organizations.

Past venues for this event have included Ridgemont Country Club, Penfield Country Club and Brook-Lea Country Club.
