Brook-Lea’s Hoecker, Braemar’s Kril Win Titles in Second RDGA Women’s Open

After winning the RDGA Women’s Open gross score title on Monday, August 31, Jenna Hoecker of Brook-Lea Country Club, left center, above, was presented with her awards and prizes by tournament coordinator Debbie Harper, left, and RDGA President Dan Overbeck, right. Maggie Kril, right, won the Women’s Open net score title. Both Hoecker and Kril won Savvy Girl Golf’s Signature and Birdie golf organization and accessory bags.

In an event billed as “celebrating women’s golf in Rochester,” the RDGA held its second annual Women’s Open on Monday, August 31, featuring overall competition in gross score and net score divisions, as well as seven separate flights based on handicaps ranging from scratch to 44.

Hosted by Penfield Country Club, the 18-hole stroke play competition included many of the top women golfers in Rochester, including past RDGA Women’s Champions Sara Eichelberger and Jenna Hoecker of Brook-Lea Country Club, as well as past WRDGA District Champions Tammy Blyth of Monroe Golf Club and Maggie Kril of Braemar Country Club.

Winning the overall scratch Women’s Open title was Hoecker, who posted a score of 3-over-par 75. Hoecker becomes the first player to win the RDGA Women’s Open, RDGA Women’s Championship (in 2014), the WRDGA Championship (2012, 2013 and 2015) and the New York State Women’s Amateur (2013) titles.

Winning the overall net Women’s Open title was Kril, also a past WRDGA Champion (in 2008), and a two-time New York State Women’s Senior Amateur Champion (2005-2006). Kril won the title in a tiebreaker with Marcia Exner of Lakeside Country Club after both players posted handicap-adjusted scores of 2-under-par 70.

Hoecker and Kril each won trophies, awards, as well as Savvy Girl Golf’s Signature and Birdie golf organization and accessory bags! Plus, each player earned points towards the inaugural RDGA Women’s Player of the Year award, to be announced at the RDGA Fall Meeting on October 6.

Also recognized following the conclusion of the 2015 RDGA Women’s Open were the seven individual flight winners, based on handicap, including:

  • Flight 1: Tammy Blyth;
  • Flight 2: Marcia Exner;
  • Flight 3: Sue Babaey;
  • Flight 4: Sandra Campolieto and Laurie Boughter;
  • Flight 5: Lisa Mulvaney;
  • Flight 6: Diane Desmarais;
  • Flight 7: Ernestine Montanero.

The only event of its kind in Rochester, this year’s field included 108 women representing 36 local private, semi-private and public golf clubs and organizations. Each year, the tournament recognizes a foursome of special guests – this year’s special guests featured a quartet of women who’ve spent many years working with junior golfers in the Rochester area and coaching girls golf: Shari Hegedorn, Joanne LeRoy, Julie Odenbach and Suzanne Yarnall.

Congratulations to all who played in and supported the 2015 RDGA Women’s Open – and thanks to Penfield Country Club, General Manager Mike Smith, PGA Professional Mike D’Agostino, their staffs, and the club’s membership for their help and assistance in making this year’s event a success!
