RDGA Day Schedule Opens at Irondequoit CC With the First of Three Events in 2015

A full field of 92 golfers competed in the the first RDGA Day of the 2015 season at historic Irondequoit Country Club on May 4.

Perfect weather continued to shine down on Rochester on Monday, May 4, as a full field of 92 golfers enjoyed a beautiful day for golf on the classic Donald Ross-designed layout of Irondequoit Country Club for the RDGA’s second event of the season – and the first of three “RDGA Days” in 2015.

The starting field was eager to tour the storied Irondequoit golf course – the one-time host to a PGA Nationwide Tour event between 2005 and 2008 – in a casual, yet competitive 18-hole stroke-play competition. Scoring was recorded in three flights: Men’s Blue Tees, Men’s White Tees and Women’s – in both Net and Gross Score Divisions.

Prior to teeing off, golfers were treated to a lunch in the Club’s grill room. The RDGA thanks the staff and members of Irondequoit Country Club for their gracious hospitality in hosting an RDGA Day event for a second consecutive year.

Winning the overall Men’s Blue Tee Flight with the lowest Gross Score was Bryan Savage (a member of the RDGA eClub), with a score of 76. Finishing in second place was Mike Volpe (Ontario Country Club) with an 80, followed by David Leidlein (RDGA eClub) and Sean Hanlon (Mendon GC), who both tied for third place with scores of 81. Also in the Men’s Blue Tee Flight, the low Net Score of 69 was posted by Leidlein, followed by a two-way tie for second place between Savage and Volpe, at 72.

In the Men’s White Tee Flight, the low Gross Score competition was won by Chuck Staszewski (Durand Eastman GC), with a round of 79. Tied for second place in the White Tee Flight were three golfers, who each posted scores of 81: Eric O’Neill (Genesee Valley GC), Michael Baroody (Centerpointe GC) and Len Maiorani (Victor Hills CC). The low Net Score in the Men’s White Tee Flight was a 66, posted by Staszewski (Durand Eastman GC), followed by Michael Sorce (RDGA eClub) with a 67. There was a three-way tie for the third place Net Score as Richard Piperni (Pinewood), Michel Fournelle (Durand Eastman GC), Baroody and Dick Usselman (RDGA eClub) each posted a score of 69.

Winning the Gross Score competition in the Women’s Flight was Mary Schlitzer (Genesee Valley GC) with a round of 89. Sharon White (Sodus Bay Heights GC) was second, with a 91, followed by Jan Ricci (Durand Eastman GC) in third place with a score of 96. The low Net Score in the Women’s Flight was shared by White and Schlitzer, who each posted a 72, followed by Nancy Jacobs (Webster GC) in third place with a 74.

Open to all amateur golfers – men and women, ages 18 and above – RDGA Day contestants must have a current USGA Handicap Index through an RDGA Member Club. Designed to be a fun, yet competitive day, the format for RDGA Day events includes 18 holes of stroke play at 100-percent handicap and contestants are welcome to request pairing in foursomes with friends who are also registered to play. Flights include Men’s Blue Tee, Men’s White Tee, and Women; winners are declared for top gross scores and top net scores in each flight.

The next RDGA Day event of 2015 is scheduled for Monday, June 8, at Mendon Golf Club, with registration open through Wednesday, June 3. For more information about this event – and how to register – visit our tournament information page HERE.
