James Infantino, winner of the 1967 RDGA District Championship at Ridgemont Country Club, hits the ceremonial first drive to open the 86th RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Jr. Memorial at Ridgemont on Wednesday, July 13. The 2016 District Championship continues through Saturday, July 16.

FOLLOW 9-HOLE SCORING FROM THE 2016 RDGA DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS at RIDGEMONT:

The first round of the 86th RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Memorial at Ridgemont Country Club concluded Wednesday, July 13, under hot, humid conditions which contributed to several high scores.

Two-time defending RDGA District
Champion Trevor Sluman tees off in Round 1.

Leading the way in Round 1 was Jack Gianniny of the Country Club of Rochester, who was unfazed by the conditions, posting a 3-under-par 69 in one of the early morning rounds.

Two golfers – Tom Linehan of Brae Burn and Ridgemont’s own Kevin Thornton – posted rounds of 1-under-par 71 to tie for second in the first round.

Two time defending champion Trevor Sluman, 2016 Section V High School champion Evan Gaesser and Bobby McCartney of Sodus Bay Heights all tied for fourth place with rounds of even par 72 on Day One of the four-day District Championship.

Prior to the start of the Championship, on Tuesday, a special opening drive ceremony was held on the first tee. James Infantino, the 1967 District Champion at Ridgemont, hit the ceremonial first tee shot, followed by Sluman.

One of the special commemorations this week during the 86th RDGA Championship was the ceremonial pairing of contestant Chuck Ryan with his sons, John Ryan III and Joe Ryan during the first and second rounds.

Chuck Ryan, brother of the late John H. Ryan Jr., the namesake of the RDGA Championship and a two-time champion, paid tribute by wearing a the type of “bucket” hat that his brother typically wore. The group also brought along the clubs often used by John Ryan Sr., who passed away last November.

A special thanks to Ridgemont Country Club owner Jim Cucinelli, his family, staff and members for their hospitality to the RDGA and District Championship competitors this week – including an hors d’ouvres reception for players and guests at the new AVID Indoor Golf & Fitness facility on Tuesday afternoon, as well as the traditional RDGA Past Champions Dinner in the club that evening.

Round 2 of the 2016 RDGA District Championship tees off on Thursday morning, with start times beginning at 7:30 am on Holes No. 1 & 10. For full second round pairings, CLICK HERE.
