Local Team Takes 4th at EWGA Cup Finals

Playing in the 2014 National EWGA Cup Finals at Troon North in Arizona on Dec. 7 and 8, the team representing EWGA Rochester included, from left to right, above: Lilian Chang, Lisa Mulvaney, Sherre Albright, Shari Morley, Debbie Harper, Elizabeth Thorley, Karen Lejman and Sheree Usiatynski.

Coming on Strong in Day 2 of the national EWGA Cup Finals at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona on Monday, December 8, the Rochester Rochachas – an 8-player team of amateurs representing the Rochester area chapter of the Executive Women’s Golf Association – moved up 12 places to finish in fourth place in the 33-team field.

The Rochester team – which included Shari Morley (captain), RDGA Board member Debbie Harper, Karen Lejman, Sherre Albright, Sheree Usiatynski, Lilian Chang, Elizabeth Thorley and Lisa Mulvaney – competed against teams from the U.S. and Canada on the Pinnacle and Monument Courses at Troon North on Sunday and Monday.

After Day One of the EWGA Cup on Sunday, the Rachachas were in a four-way tie for 16th place, having won two four-ball matches and one singles match. Only two points behind the leaders – the OK Thunder Stix from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and the Little Rock N’ Rollers from Central Arkansas – the Rochachas were in good position to contend for the title in Day Two on Monday.

On Day 2, the Rochachas added 2 1/2 points to their 4-ball match total – and 3 points to their singles total – to finish the competition with 7 1/2 points. The winning team – Par Tee Down Dayton, from Dayton, Ohio – finished with a total of 9 points.

In September, the Rochachas battled 12 other teams from the U.S. and Canada to win the EWGA Cup-Great Lakes Qualifier played at the Cardinal Crest Golf Club in Kent, Ontario, Canada.

That performance in September – in which the team won a three-way sudden death playoff – earned the Rochachas a trip to the national EWGA Cup Finals.

The Rochachas were one of three teams from the Rochester area to compete in the September Great Lakes Regional Qualifier – and in winning the playoff, beat two teams from Canada on their home course.
